Ingredients

Ingredients

4 Bakers Delight Brioche Hamburger Buns, halved
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp plain flour
1 cup milk
4 eggs, fried
8 slices of ham
2 cups grated cheese (Gruyere)
Salt & pepper to taste

Method

    1. Step 1

Pre-heat oven grill. Melt the butter in a small saucepan over a medium heat. Add flour and cook, stirring with a wooden spoon, for 1-2 minutes until the mixture begins to bubble.

    2. Step 2

Gradually pour in the milk, while stirring to create a smooth rich béchamel sauce. Bring the saucepan to the boil, then reduce heat to medium while stirring for 4-5 minutes, or until the mixture begins to thicken. Add salt and pepper to taste.

    3. Step 3

Place one half of the Brioche Hamburger Buns on a tray, and assemble by adding 2 slices of ham to each bun, topping with ½ cup of grated cheese. Place in the oven until cheese begins to melt. Remove tray from oven. Add a generous spoonful of béchamel sauce and top with remaining Brioche Hamburger Bun, before returning to the oven.

    4. Step 4

Grill until golden brown. Remove from the oven and top each Brioche Hamburger Bun with a fried egg. Serve immediately.

FAQ’s

What is Croque Madame made of?

Croque Madame is simply a grilled ham and cheese sandwich topped with a runny fried or poached egg. It also contains bechamel sauce, which is a creamy sauce made from milk, flour, and butter.

Why is it called a Croque Madame?

A Croque Madame got its name as the fried egg on top looks like a woman’s wide-brimmed sun hat. A staple of French cafes, it’s a delicious variation of the other popular Croque, the Croque Monsieur.

What is the difference between a Croque Monsieur and Madame?

While a Croque Monsieur and Croque Madame are both French grilled sandwiches, their key difference is in their ingredients and how the bread is prepared. Croque Monsieur is made by dipping the bread into an egg mixture before frying, which gives it more of a French toast feel. In a Croque Madame, the egg is placed on top of the toasted sandwich. A Croque Monsieur is also typically served without any additional toppings.
