Milestones & Events

Here’s a timeline of some of our proudest achievements, since first opening our doors in 1980

1980 - Bakers Delight was founded on May 1, 1980

Roger and Lesley Gillespie opened the first Bakers Delight in Hawthorn, Melbourne, with their friend Gary Stephenson. The bakery’s still going strong today and Roger and Lesley are still our joint CEOs.

1988 – We launched our franchising concept

In 1988, Roger and Lesley owned 15 bakeries. “We realised that we would need a different management structure,” Lesley said. “This lead to our investigation and research into the franchising industry.” Now, we offer franchise opportunities in bakeries in Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

1991 – We open our doors in Adelaide

In 1991, the first interstate franchise was opened in the city of churches. We were excited bring our delicious, fresh bread to Adelaide.

1994 – We win our first Food Retailer of the Year award

We were delighted to be crowned Food Retailer of the Year in Westfield’s national awards. An honour to be up against such prestigious competition.

1994 – We bake the first ever Cheesymite Scroll

1994 was a monumental year for one of Australia’s favourite snacks. A hungry baker thought of blending his two favourite flavours together for a morning snack. He invented the Cheesymite Scroll and the rest, as they say, is history.

1995 – We expand to the land of the long white cloud

In November, we went international for the first time, heading across the Tasman to open a Bakers Delight in Pakuranga. This was the first of many bakeries in New Zealand.

1998 – We win our third Food Retailer of the Year award

We were chuffed to win our third Food Retailer of the Year award in Westfield’s national award ceremony.

1999 –Bundraiser begins

Our bakeries in Western Australia began raising funds for the Princess Margaret Hospital in Perth by donating money from Hot Cross Bun sales and on-counter donation tins. This partnership was the catalyst for a national fundraiser to support children’s hospitals all around Australia. Now, we call it our Bundraiser Day and it’s held every year in the lead up to Easter.

1999 – Our partnership with Breast Cancer Network Australia begins

Since 1999, we’ve raised more than $15 million for BCNA. A landmark partnership, the money goes directly to the support of the thousands of Australian women and their families who are affected by breast cancer.

2001 – We win Australian Franchise System of the Year

We’ve worked hard to build a successful business and a huge part of that is the growth of our successful franchises. We were thrilled to be voted Australian Franchise System of the Year by the FCA and to be able to share the honour with our franchisees.

2002 – We’re recognised for the second year running

We’re proud of every one of our franchisees and the freedom, pride and challenges being a Bakers Delight franchisee brings them. So being recognised by the FCA as the Australian Franchise System of the Year (again) was just the icing on the cake.

2003 - We win the LA Judge Award

Our star baker Andrew won the country’s most prestigious baking award. Here’s what our Founder and Executive Chairman, Roger Gillespie had to say: “Being crowned the LA Judge winner is a fantastic reinforcement of a baker’s skill and commitment and we are so proud of Andrew and his achievements and look forward to him being a future leader in Bakers Delight.”

2003 - Bakers Delight opens in Canada

In November, we opened our first Canadian store under the COBS Bread brand. Based in Edgemont, it was the first of 11 COBS Bread bakeries to open in Canada in 12 months.

2004 - We win the LA Judge Award for the second time

The LA Judge Baking Award is Australia’s most prestigious baking award. Our star baker, Joel Benbow of Bakers Delight Nedlands won in 2004 and we couldn’t have been prouder.

2004 – We win a Prime Minister’s Award

We’re so proud of our continued support of BCNA and were honoured to receive the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Community Business Partnership (Multi-site large business) from John Howard.

2005 – Retail Asia Pacific Top 500 Retailers

We were proud to be named one of the top 10 retailers in the Retail Asia Pacific Top 500 Retailers awards. An incredible achievement.

2005 – We celebrated our 25th birthday

A quarter of a century! It may have felt like just yesterday that we opened our first bakery in Melbourne, but Bakers Delight celebrated turning 25 in style.

2006 – COBS Bread expands again

We opened two new bakeries in Edmonton and Toronto. Three years after COBS Bread first opened its doors to the Canadian public, we were thrilled to move into two more provinces.

2007 – A new bread star is born

We introduced our new Hi-Fibre Lo-GI range, to help give our customers longer lasting energy. Tastier and softer than most white breads, our Hi-Fibre Lo-GI bread proved a real winner with our customers and is still one of our top selling breads.

2009 – Business Review Weekly recognise our community practice

We were proud finalists for Excellence in Community Practice in the BRW Awards, held every year by prestigious magazine Business Review Weekly.

2010 – Cheers to chia

We formed a partnership with the Chia Co. to use Australian-grown chia seeds from the Kimberly Region of WA in a range of products. We were ahead of our time with our use of these powerful little seeds. They are packed with Omega 3 ALA, and great for digestive health.

2010 - We raise more funds for BCNA

Our Pink Bun campaign raised more than $800,000 for Breast Cancer Network Australia. BCNA CEO, Lyn Swinburne AM, said 2010's fundraising achievement was an incredible celebration of our 10 years working together.

2011 - Raising the bar for BCNA

Thanks to the generous contribution from our stores and their local communities, the Pink Bun campaign raised the bar again, with a huge $950,000 to help families affected by breast cancer.

2012 - Winner of Franchise Council Australia Award

We were so proud of Joanna and Maurice Patterson of Bakers Delight Caneland (QLD) for winning the National Franchise Community Service Award through the Franchise Council of Australia. Not only are they active supporters of BCNA, but they helped out their local community during the 2011 floods.

2013 - Winner of Reader’s Digest Most Trusted Brands Award

We put a lot of time and effort into making sure every single slice of bread we produce is up to the same high standard. So we were thrilled you noticed and voted us the winner of the annual Most Trusted Brands Award in Reader’s Digest.

2013 - Winner of Food Magazine Award

We were honoured when our delicious and nutritious Chia & Fruit Loaf was named winner of the Baked Goods category in the 2013 Food Magazine Awards. The awards recognise innovation in the food industry, and our win was a real tribute to our hardworking team.

2014 – COBS Bread heads to Saskatchewan

Our delicious bread continued its rise in Canada, with COBS Bread expanding to Saskatoon and making Saskatchewan our fourth Canadian province.

2014 – We’re in the Top 500 Private Companies

Thanks to the hard work of all our franchisees and employees, we were recognised as one of Australia's best businesses in The Australian Newspaper's Top 500 Private Companies for 2014.

2015 – We raised $1.79m for Breast Cancer Network Australia

Our record breaking Pink Bun Campaign raised an amazing $1.79m for BCNA, taking our total to more than $15m since our proud partnership began.

What are the next steps to becoming a franchisee?

To assist you with your decision about becoming a Franchisee our recruitment process is broken into 4 stages:

Whilst beneficial, no previous business or bakery experience is required. We provide you with a comprehensive 16 week training program to teach you both the business skills and practical skills that you will need to operate your bakery.

How much will it cost for me to purchase a Bakers Delight bakery?

The cost to purchase an existing bakery is dependent on a number of factors including the length of the lease and franchise agreement term, past performance, plant and equipment value and associated good will.

Setting up a new bakery will cost between $450,000 and $550,000 on average whilst an existing bakery may cost up to $1.5 million.

What options are there to help me finance my business?

As an established franchise system we are accredited with a number of banks across Australia. As a general rule, a bank may lend up to 60% of the value of the purchase price; the purchaser is then required to fund the balance through cash or equity in assets.
