FAQs

What is on an ice cream sundae?

A traditional ice cream sundae is generally ice cream topped with a flavoured syrup, whipped cream and sprinkles or a cherry. However, there are plenty of flavours for you to explore – from your favourite biscuits to chocolates and even lollies.

Why do they call it a sundae?

There’s no one easy answer as to why this popular treat is called a sundae. One theory is that the term sundae is derived from the tradition of serving ice cream with syrup on Sundays in the late 19th century. Another is that a pharmacist Charles Sonntag, who created the treat, named it after himself. The original name was Sonntag, which means Sunday in German.

What’s the difference between an ice cream and an ice cream sundae?

The main difference between ice cream and a sundae is the sundae is a specific type of dessert. A sundae is often considered to be a more indulgent and elaborate version of a plain ice cream cone. Sundaes also typically come with toppings and are presented in a glass or bowl.
