Introduction

If you like your chicken a little bit spicy, with a whole lot of smokey flavour, you’ll love our harissa chicken recipe! It’s the perfect mid-week dinner recipe to cook up when you want something tasty, as it’s easy to prepare and is ready in just 25 minutes. The harissa marinade gives the chicken a peppery, tangy, smokiness that goes perfectly on the barbeque. The capsicum and corn are the ideal crunchy accompaniments for this chicken harissa, and the fresh mixed leaves bring it all together for a quick and easy taste sensation. For best results, let the harissa marinade work its magic overnight, but if you’re pressed for time and want it now, give it about an hour.

FAQs

Harissa chicken is chicken marinated and grilled in harissa sauce, powder or paste, a popular sauce originally from Tunisia. It normally contains roasted capsicum, dried chillies, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, and spices like cumin, coriander, and caraway.

Harissa has a tangy flavour, as well as a smokiness and spice. As different chillies can be used, there can be variations in spice level and flavour, so no two harissa’s are the same.

The name harissa comes from the word ‘harasa’, which means ‘to pound’ in Arabic as it’s made by pounding the ingredients together. Harissa is a popular condiment in North African and Middle Eastern cuisines - particularly in places like Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria.
