Are Hot Cross Buns Australian?
While Hot Cross Buns are cherished in Australia, they don’t come from here—as much as we’d love to claim them! The origin of Hot Cross Buns officially dates back to 1733, where they’re mentioned in relation to Easter in the ‘Poor Robin Almanac’. But Hot Cross Buns can be traced back even further to the time of the Saxons, Druids and Greeks. You’ll even find evidence of them in the ruins of Pompeii, where remains of similar buns were found in an ancient version of the bakery.
