FAQs

Some of the best melting cheeses for mushroom toasties are the Alpine cheeses, like Gruyère, Emmental, and Comté, because they have a relatively low acidity which makes them elastic and easy to melt. Other cheeses that are great for melting on your mushroom toastie include mozzarella and Raclette.

When you’re looking for the best bread for your mushroom toastie, you need to think about texture and flavour. Sourdough or rye work well as their flavours complement the mushrooms, and both hold up well when toasted. Seeded breads will add extra crunch, so they’re a nice addition, but if you want to go simple, you can even go with plain white bread.

The main difference between a mushroom sandwich and a toastie, is that a toastie is, well, toasted. A mushroom sandwich is also typically served cold, while the toastie will often be hot. The ingredients differ too, so while a toastie will have cooked mushroom and melted cheese as a base, a mushroom sandwich will tend to use raw mushrooms with salad ingredients like lettuce, tomato, and bean sprouts.
