1 tsp baking powder

1/4 cup all-purpose flour
Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)
Oil for frying

Sliders

8 Bakers Delight Dinner Rolls
1 cucumber, ribboned
Hummus (we used store-bought)

Method

    1. Step 1

To make the falafel, add the chickpeas, onion, garlic, coriander, parsley, ground cumin, baking powder, salt, black pepper, flour and red pepper flakes, if using, into a blender or food processor. Puree until the mixture is mostly smooth. Refrigerate for at about 15 minutes

    2. Step 2

Add about 7cm of the canola oil to a large pot or deep sided pan

    3. Step 3

Form the falafel into balls and place gently into the hot oil. Allow to fry for about 2 minutes and gently rotate the balls to continue frying on all sides. The falafel balls are done when they are a golden brown colour all around

    4. Step 4

Remove from the oil with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel to drain

    5. Step 5

Gently toast the Dinner Rolls in preperation of building your sliders

    6. Step 6

Prepare the sliders by spreading hummus on the top and bottom of each roll, then add a falafel ball and smash it down gently with the palm of your hand. Top with ribboned cucumbers

FAQs

What is traditional falafel made of?

Traditional falafel is typically made from ground chickpeas, mixed with herbs, spices and other ingredients like parsley, garlic and onion. The mixture is generally shaped into small patties or balls and then deep-fried or baked.

What holds falafel together?

Flour is generally used to hold falafel together. Some other recipes may also use bread crumbs or egg as a binding ingredient. It’s important to not add too much to avoid dry, crumbly falafel while too little can cause the mixture to fall apart during cooking.

Why is my falafel falling apart when I fry it?

If your falafel is falling apart when you fry it, then your mixture may be too wet. Add some extra flour to help balance out the wetness of the chickpeas. If your mixture doesn’t look too wet then it may be too dry. If you’ve added too much flour then the balls will struggle to stay together and instead fall apart when frying.
