What is the best way to store my bread?

Crusty loaves and rolls, like our delicious artisan range, are best stored in a paper bag and eaten fresh on the day they’re baked (just try and resist). Our other soft breads, rolls, buns and scones should be stored at room temperature in a plastic bag, bread bag, or in a well-ventilated bread bin. This will stop the bread from drying out and keep it fresh for days.

We have seen some instances of ink colour transfer if the bags are exposed to direct sunlight for an extended period and/or moisture i.e:
– Wet surface on bag or benchtop.
– Temperature change room vs outdoor temperature or Refrigerator which could cause condensation (in this case from freezing).
All inks used are food grade safe.

What do I do if I have feedback about a product?

Due to the scratch baking methods used in our bakeries, minor variances may occur in our products. If you are disappointed with the product you have received, we recommend contacting the bakery you purchased the product from. Alternatively, you can fill out our contact us form here.

Can I freeze my bread?

All Bakers Delight breads are suitable to freeze and can be stored in the freezer for up to four months. For maximum freshness, place the bread in a freezer bag, remove as much air as you can and then seal it.

When you’re ready to thaw, you’ve got a couple of options; remove the seal and leave it to thaw naturally and slowly in its packaging, or, if you’ve got hungry mouths to feed, remove it from the bag, wrap it in paper towel and put it in the microwave on high for bursts of 10 seconds until it’s perfectly soft and ready to eat. Be careful not to overheat.

We have seen some instances of ink colour transfer if the bags are exposed to direct sunlight for an extended period and/or moisture i.e:
– Wet surface on bag or benchtop.

Where does Bakers Delight source its ingredients?

Where possible, Bakers Delight source ingredients that have been grown or made in Australia. In some instances, this is not possible due to the significant quantities required by our bakeries.

Approximately 60% of our ingredients are grown or made in Australia. This includes our flours, canola oil, grains, yeast, salt, sugar and meats.

Where do I find ingredients and nutrition information for Bakers Delights products?

This can be found here on our website under the product section. Alternatively, you can ask the staff at your local bakers Delight to print you out a ‘What’s in it’ receipt for the product you are interested in.

Please note Bakers Delight products are baked from scratch therefore all products may contain undisclosed ingredients due to the high risk of cross contamination between ingredients in the bakery.

Please find the definition of our allergen icons below:

Which products contain preservatives and additives?

Food additives are used to preserve food and/or improve its taste, appearance, quality and stability. Additives play an important part in food supply ensuring that food is safe and meets customer needs.

Preservatives are one type of food additive that are used to prolong the shelf life of food by preventing deterioration.

The Bakers Delight Everyday Classics and Continental range are preservative free – they do not contain any preservatives, including 282 which can affect certain people.

For details on each Bakers Delight product, please view the nutritional panel of each product found here on the website. All Bakers Delight products meet the guidelines set by Food Standards Australia New Zealand on the use of safe additives.

What are allergens?

Some foods can cause severe allergic reactions in some people – this is known as anaphylaxis. Foods such as peanuts, tree nuts (e.g. cashews, almonds, walnuts), shellfish, finned fish, milk, eggs, sesame, soybean & lupin and their products may cause severe allergic reactions and must be declared on labels or available to customers. Gluten is also included in this list as a caution for those with coeliac disease.

In addition, foods containing sulphites must be declared in the ingredients list on the ‘What’s in it’ when present in foods in concentrations of 10 milligrams per kilogram or more of added sulphites. This is the level that may trigger asthma attacks in some asthmatics.

Which allergenic ingredients are used in our bakeries?

The following allergenic ingredients are used in our bakeries:

Cereals containing gluten

  • Egg
  • Milk
  • Sesame seeds
  • Soybean
  • Tree-nuts
  • Lupin

Crustacea, fish and peanut ingredients are not used in our bakeries however, please be advised that our suppliers have indicated that some ingredients may contain these allergens.

For specific allergen information please refer to the ingredients section within the individual products on the Bakers Delight website.

Does Bakers Delight bake gluten / wheat free breads?

Bakers Delight use wheat based flour, therefore all products contain gluten. We pride ourselves on baking our bread from scratch everyday using raw ingredients.

Unfortunately, we are unable to produce gluten or wheat free bread because of the high risk of cross contamination between products.

Does Bakers Delight bake yeast free products?

Yeast is an important part of bread making. It ferments sugars and produces a gas which enables the bread to rise.

Bakers yeast is an ingredient in all products made at Bakers Delight the only exceptions being scones and our Authentic Sourdough.

The Authentic Sourdough products are made using traditional bread making methods. This means that the Authentic Sourdough doesn’t contain any bakers yeast; it is made using a culture of wild yeasts and bacteria which naturally occur in the air and flour. The culture continually ferments in flour and water and is used each time the sourdough is baked.

Do your products contain folic acid?

As per Australian legislation, all wheat flour used in bread making must contain folate excluding organic wheat flour, rye and spelt flour.

The level of fortification required is between 2 and 3 milligrams of folic acid per kilogram of wheat flour for making bread. Folic acid is the only permitted form of folate that can be used to meet these requirements. According to FSANZ, Bread will contain an average of 120 micrograms of folic acid per 100 grams (approximately three slices).

Do you bake bread with a low salt content?

Bakers Delight has reduced the salt levels of our traditional white, wholemeal and country grain ranges. We also offer a lower salt alternative in our Cape Seed range with salt levels below industry targets. We continue to look for opportunities to reduce salt levels across our range.

Do any Bakers Delight products contain Genetically Modified ingredients?

We can advise that none of our products contain genetically modified ingredients including our wheat. We work closely with our suppliers to ensure that all ingredients supplied to Bakers Delight comply with the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Code.

Does Bakers Delight have soy-friendly products?

As soy is an allergen widely used in our bakeries, we are legally required to list it in all of our ingredient listings on our website. Soy Flour is a natural ingredient that helps with the baking process and the delivery of natural enzymes. It is only used in very small quantities in our bakeries.

Due to the scratch baking method used in our bakeries, where products are prepared and baked from raw ingredients, we cannot guarantee that any product will be free of any ingredient used.

Here is the complete list of our ranges that don’t contain any soy:

  • Ciabatta
  • Turkish
  • Sourdough
  • Rye Sourdough
  • Pane Di Casa
  • Rye Pane Di Casa
  • Continental
Are any of your products suitable for vegetarians/vegans?

Yes, Bakers Delight bake many products that are suitable for Vegans and Vegetarians.

Many products contain ingredients derived from animals including ham, bacon, salami, eggs, cheese and milk as detailed in our Ingredients panel with the specific product here on our website.

Please keep in mind that our products are prepared from scratch and whilst all care is taken there may be cross over between products.

Are any Bakers Delight products Halal certified?

Unfortunately, our bakeries and products are not Halal certified. We don’t have segregated preparation areas for the production of Halal certified products and some products contain non-Halal ingredients, including pork.

Bakeries

Are Bakers Delight breads really baked fresh each day?

Yes, all breads are baked fresh each day. Any leftover product is removed from the bakery at the end of each day.

What happens to the left over products at the end of the day?

All of our bakeries promise customers that their bread is baked from scratch every day. To commit to this promise, all surplus products must be removed from the bakery at the end of trade.

Where possible, Bakers Delight franchisees donate surplus bread to local charities and community groups across Australia and New Zealand. Donations are possible because of the relationships built between a bakery and the local community, and each bakery provides product to support those in need in their local area. We have systems in place to minimise the left over bread at the end of each day, and make every effort to ensure fresh baked bread is going to those who need it most.

In some situations, bread cannot be donated due to a charity party being unable to collect or not requiring product on the day. Certain products, such as those that contain meat or custard cannot be donated. Bakers Delight welcomes new partners who may have a need for product, and we ask you contact your local Bakers Delight to make an arrangement or alternatively let us know using the following form.

Why is the price of products different between bakeries?

Bakers Delight conducts regular price reviews for all products. These reviews take into consideration the ingredient and operational costs that our bakeries are exposed to over the reviewed period.

As our bakeries are individually franchised, current legislation restrict franchisees from price fixing. As such we can only offer a Recommended Retail Price (RRP) to our franchisees. The bakeries can then choose to adopt these prices or apply an alternate pricing structure based on their own business needs.

Why are some products not available at certain Bakers Delights?

Our mandatory products are available across all of our bakeries. Some products are optional for bakeries to produce and therefore it is at the discretion of the Franchisee to determine their production needs. If there is a certain product you are after please reach out directly to your local bakery to see if they are baking it. You can find their details here.

How can I find my local Bakers Delight’s trading hours?

Visit our bakery locator here on our website.

Can you tell me how I can apply for a job at one of your bakeries?

Our bakeries are individually franchised, given this each Franchisee monitors and maintains their own employment needs. To apply for a position, you will need to contact the bakery directly. You can locate their contact details here.

Sustainability

What is Bakers Delight doing to reduce the amount of single use plastic in bakeries?

Bakers Delight no longer offers plastic carry bags. Customers can purchase paper carry bags or tote bags.

Bakers Delight acknowledges there is work to be done to reduce the use of single-use plastic in bakeries. While we work on training around offering paper bags where possible, we still feel there is a place for plastic bags in our bakeries. Therefore, we continue to work with our suppliers on alternative plastic solutions to improve both the material specifications and the recyclability, as we still see this as an option to package our bread for shelf life and avoid food waste.

We have trialled selling reusable bread bags, and while they were not a viable option for our Network to continue (we will focus on baking and selling bread!), we now have a procedure for all bakeries to follow and to encourage customers to bring their own reusable bag/container, etc.

How are our reusable bags better for the environment?

Every bag has an environmental impact, however after examining the research, we are confident that plastic carry bags come out well in front of paper carry bags, for their lower overall environmental impact. Numerous Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies have shown:

  • Paper carry bags require at least four times more water and nearly double the energy than plastic carry bags on average to produce
  • Plastic carry bags produce significantly less greenhouse gas emissions in production than paper
  • Plastic carry bags create 3-5 times less municipal solid waste than paper bags
Is Bakers Delight sustainable?

Yes, Bakers Delight is actively working to become more sustainable across our operations. Key initiatives include:

  • Donating 70% of unsold bread to local charities
  • Trialling recycled and reusable packaging materials
  • Partnering with food rescue apps like Too Good To Go and Foody Bag
  • Phasing out plastic bread tags in favour of cardboard tags, ahead of regulatory changes
  • Supporting local suppliers like Manildra and Fonterra to reduce food miles and promote responsible farming

These efforts reflect our commitment to baking a better future, one loaf at a time.

What makes a food product sustainable?

A sustainable food product is one that’s produced, packaged, and distributed in a way that minimises its environmental impact and supports long-term ecological balance. This can include:

  • Using locally sourced ingredients to reduce transportation emissions
  • Minimising waste through efficient production and donation of surplus
  • Using eco-friendly, recyclable, or compostable packaging
  • Reducing energy and water consumption during processing
  • Supporting fair trade and ethical labour practices

At Bakers Delight, sustainable food products are made using locally milled wheat, packaged with recycled or reusable materials, and distributed through partnerships that prevent unnecessary waste.

How can a bakery be sustainable?

A bakery can be sustainable by adopting practices that reduce environmental impact and support community wellbeing. Examples include:

  • Donating surplus food to charities instead of sending it to landfill
  • Using eco-friendly packaging, such as recycled paper bags or reusable bread bags
  • Sourcing local ingredients to reduce carbon emissions from transport
  • Reducing single-use plastics, like switching to cardboard bread tags
  • Partnering with food rescue and food waste reduction initiatives, such as Saveful, Too Good To Go and Foody Bag
  • Educating customers on how to reduce food waste at home, such as freezing bread or using leftovers creatively

Bakers Delight implements all these strategies as part of our long-term sustainability commitments.

Why is it important to reduce food waste?

Reducing food waste is crucial for both environmental and social reasons:

  • Environmental impact: Food waste generates methane in landfills, which are a potent greenhouse gas. Reducing waste helps lower emissions and conserve resources used in food production (like water, energy, and land).
  • Economic benefit: Wasted food equals wasted money. By making use of leftovers and managing consumption, households and businesses save money.
  • Social good: Redistributing surplus food helps support people in need, reducing hunger and supporting community wellbeing.

Bakers Delight reduces food waste by donating leftover bread, turning waste into animal feed or fertiliser, and helping customers reduce waste at home with practical tips and recipes.

I want to work at a specific bakery but there are not any jobs advertised. What should I do?

Even if the bakery you want to work at is not hiring right now, you can still express your interest. We always love hearing from eager people, and our bakeries tend to hire every couple of months.

So next time you are at the bakery, just ask to speak to the manager and let them know you are interested in a job. It is a good idea to bring an up-to-date CV that includes your contact details and any experience you have. They will get back to you as soon as any positions become available.

How much will I be paid?

It depends. As each of our bakeries are individual businesses, they may have their own workplace agreements and rates of pay. Pay rates will be discussed during the interview process and will be listed in your contract. If you have any other questions, please contact the bakery you are applying to directly.

What is Bakers Delight’s position on the gender pay gap results recently published by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA)?

Throughout our 45-year (and counting!) business journey, we’ve had a long and proud history of employing local people in communities around Australia. We are also proud to have a female co-founder and to have been led by female CEOs throughout our history.

As in previous years, Bakers Delight’s overall gender pay gap is strongly influenced by the large number of part-time or casual retail service-based roles that are most commonly a first job for teenagers or young adults in our company-owned bakeries. Unlike the roles in our Corporate Office, these positions generally involve fewer working hours, and while they are strictly paid in accordance with the General Retail Industry Award 2020, they are commonly at the lower end of the pay scale compared to other positions within the business. The majority of these positions are filled by females.

We are proud to be known as a place where young female staff feel safe and encouraged to grow and develop, so we have an important role to play in driving the evolution of these traditionally female-focussed bakery roles. We are also proud that half of our executive team are women, and in all quartiles of the WGEA gender composition banding, Bakers Delight Holdings employs many more women than its comparison group.  We believe this reflects Bakers Delight’s commitment to providing a workplace that supports women throughout the development of their careers.

In the meantime, we will continue exploring opportunities to help close the gender pay gap. In particular, in FY2026 we will be focussing on initiatives to attract more women into bakery production roles.  Currently around one third of our bakers are women and we’d like to see that get to half.
