With so much nutrition information around these days it can be hard keeping track of what’s right to eat for good health. One of the foods people are often unsure about is bread. Some people believe that because bread contains carbohydrate, it can be ‘fattening’ however it’s important to know that it’s not carbohydrate alone that makes us gain weight. The most important thing when it comes to weight management is eating the right amount of kilojoules every day from all foods and drinks.

Carbohydrate, which comes from starches such as those in bread or from sugars, such as those in fruit,  is in fact the body’s preferred source of energy. Carbohydrate is an important source of fuel for our muscles and brain and is necessary for the body to carry out all the activities it needs to in a typical day.

page-whatwebake-healthyAs a guide to knowing how much to eat, Go Grains Australia recommends including at least four serves of grain based foods daily, with at least half of these being wholegrains. Grain based foods include bread, rolls, cereals, pasta, rice and crackers. An example of a serve of a grain based food is two slices of bread or a medium bread roll. Examples of wholegrain breads from Bakers Delight include Wholemeal, Capeseed and Wholemeal Country Grain. So you can relax, knowing that enjoying bread as part of a balanced diet will help you meet your four serves of grain based foods daily for good health!
